WHAT TO EXPECT

From your appointment and hearing aids

PLEASE NOTE

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, to keep everyone safe our audiologist will be wearing a face covering, PPE and gloves and we also ask both yourself and the person accompanying you to wear your face covering if possible and use the hand sanitiser provided.

APPOINTMENT OPTIONS

We understand that a visit to see a hearing aid consultant may cause some worries, especially for a first-time visitor. That’s why we created an outline of what to expect during your appointment, be it online, in store or as a home visit, so that are no unexpected surprises and no extra reasons to cause you anxiety.

In store appointments

In store appointments are ONLY available through advance booking. To book an appointment you need to call James & Son Hearing on 0800 970 49 25 so we can take a few details and confirm our first available appointment for you.

On the day, we recommend you bring a family member with you so you feel comfortable and supported. Once you arrive at the SelectSpecs store in Westgate, you will be greeted by a SelectSpecs staff member who will direct you to the audiology area to meet our friendly audiologist who will begin the consultation with a general chat about your hearing and how it may be affecting you and your family.

Then we begin to test your hearing which is a very simple and non-invasive process – if you wish you can try our online hearing test in advance to get an idea on what to expect. The only difference is that the in store hearing test would be completed in greater detail to get an accurate picture of your hearing level.

Once the test is completed, the audiologist will explain the results to you in detail and discuss how your hearing could be impacting on your daily life. If the results show no pathological problems with your ear and requires no further investigation, then the audiologist will begin to explore your potential hearing aid options and explain how the devices can have a positive impact on your quality of life.

Hearing aids can potentially be fitted during the appointment should you choose to do so, but we do not put pressure on you buying the hearing aids on the day – we pride ourselves on always offering a transparent service and we will discuss prices and technology necessary for your specific hearing aid requirements, but we completely understand you may need time to think about your options and discuss with a trusted family member.

This is 100% understandable and it’s completely your choice. We are always available for another appointment to fit the hearing aids at a later time should you decide it’s the right option for you.

If you decide you would like to go ahead during this appointment and try a hearing aid, we may be able to fit you with one on the day. Once the hearing aid is fitted, the audiologist will explain how to use it and how to adjust it to your specific requirements. Certain specific features can also be added to the hearing aid during your appointment to help with specific situations – e.g. crowded conversations or adding a wireless TV setting which enables you to stream all sound from your TV to your hearing aid. Depending on how comfortable you feel with adjusting settings on the aid our audiologist can set this up for you during the appointment, or the aid can be programmed to run fully automatically so you don’t have to worry about a thing, just pop the aid in and get on with your day.

Home Visits

Home visits are available by appointment ONLY. To book a home visit you need to call us on 0800 970 49 25 so we can take a few details and confirm our first available appointment for you.

This service mostly follows the same process as an in store visit, but conducted in the comfort of your own home. We recommend you have a family member in attendance with you, so you feel comfortable and supported.

The appointment usually takes around one hour – in which time we discuss your hearing concerns and what can be done to mitigate any hearing problems. We conduct a thorough hearing test and explain the results in detail to understand more about the hearing issues you’ve been facing.

Should you decide to think about your options, you can book a further appointment to fit your hearing aids at any point by calling us to schedule another visit from our audiologist.

If you decide you would like to go ahead and try a hearing aid, we may be able to fit you with one on the day. Once the hearing aid is fitted, the audiologist will explain how to use it and how to adjust it to your specific requirements. Certain specific features can also be added to the hearing aid during our visit to help with specific situations – e.g. crowded conversations or adding a wireless TV setting which enables you to stream all sound from your TV to your hearing aid. Depending on how comfortable you feel with adjusting settings on the aid our audiologist can set this up for you during the visit, or the aid can be programmed to run fully automatically so you don’t have to worry about a thing, just pop the aid in and get on with your day.

If for whatever reason we would not be able to fit you with a hearing aid on the day, we would arrange a suitable time to return for a fitting. This will be confirmed by our audiologist during your visit.

All hearing aids we provide come with a 30 day free trial to make sure you are completely satisfied with your purchase.
